What's On Deck In June
Baseball. Baseball. Baseball. And some more Baseball. Oh, and some New York sports here and there too. Plus, a quick note on Lou Gehrig Day in Major League Baseball...
Welcome to summer baseball, everyone.
With Memorial Day now firmly in the rearview mirror, we’ve reached the glory days of hot summer days at the ballpark with an icy cold beer in one hand and a mouthwatering hot dog (yes, with ketchup and mustard) in the other.
You can’t beat taking in a ball game on a sweltering hot day in June.
Before I proceed, though, I want to recognize the 4th annual Lou Gehrig Day in Major League Baseball.
Gehrig, otherwise known as The Iron Horse, who appeared in a then-record 2,130 consecutive games, had his career sadly cut short, before tragically dying of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) on June 2, 1941.
There is no cure for the disease that carries Gehrig’s name, and it is a disease that affects approximately 30,000 people in the U.S.
Sarah Langs, who is a stellar researcher and reporter for MLB.com, is fighting her own battle with ALS and is a continued inspiration for us all. I rely on Sarah’s incredible work on a daily basis, and her passion for the game of baseball is infectious.
I’ve found myself thinking about Sarah and her courageous fight a lot today, and I strongly recommend hitting up Amazon Prime and watching ‘For Love & Life’ - a touching documentary about Brian Wallach and his fight with ALS. The film provides a lot of insight into just how terrible a disease ALS is, and the devastating impact it has on all those who have to live with the debilitating disease.
It is also very much worth your time to watch Lou Gehrig’s famous and incredibly emotional farewell speech to the sport and the franchise he gave everything for:

MLB is also holding a special auction to benefit the Sean M. Healey & AMG Center for ALS. Some of the items up for bid include some really cool and one-of-a-kind Lou Gehrig Day Baseball Cards. There is one for each team, featuring players selected by Sarah Langs.
You can bid for those signed cards HERE.
The best way to keep honoring the great Lou Gehrig’s legacy is to continue to stand together in raising awareness and funds in the fight against ALS.
It has been quiet here at The Steele Sports Bar over the last little while. I’ve been dealing with a health scare, and that in turn has sparked a downward spiral in my mental health.
I lifted the curtain on my struggles in a detailed piece earlier this weekend, which you can read HERE.
However, I’m gradually emerging from what was a pretty tough slump and getting back to some level of normality. In turn, I’m beyond pumped about the month ahead here. So, naturally, I wanted to quickly jump on and explain what you can expect from The Steele Sports Bar over the coming days and weeks as we dive into June…
Baseball. Lots of it - As I’ve outlined before, this site is predominately tilted towards America’s National Pastime and, given that I’ve been sidelined for the last little while, I am bursting with baseball topics I want to talk about. From the Yankees and the Phillies leading the way, to the Mets being the Mets, to Shohei Ohtani doing Shohei Ohtani things and lots more, get ready for a mouthwatering buffet of daily baseball content.
Jets Diary - At some point this month I’ll publish another edition of my Jets Diary, where I’ll map out exactly how I’m feeling about this team heading into Training Camp. Spoiler alert; I’m trying not to set myself up for utter heartbreak. Again.
Rangers Breakdown - Speaking of heartbreak and pain, I’ll be taking a deep dive into the New York Rangers and the end of their season over the coming days. Not reaching the Stanley Cup Final should be seen as a huge failure, and that raises several probing questions about the core of that team moving forward.
Podcast - I’ll be bringing back The Andrew Steele Podcast this month, and I have some great guests lined up. There will be lots of baseball talk.
Most Popular NYC Athletes - I saw something on ESPN New York the other day that really got me thinking. They ranked the most popular athletes currently in New York sports based on Instagram followers, so I’m going to attempt to rank the most popular current New York sports stars based on overall fan opinion.
Things I Loved In Sports - Starting later this month, once a week I’ll take a look back at a bunch of things that caught my eye throughout the sports world that past week. I’ll also be launching a baseball-specific version.
New Baseball Lineup - Okay, so I’ve been promising this for weeks and weeks now. But, given that I’m slowly getting back to normal, my intention is to finally launch the slew of unique baseball features I have been workshopping for months. These should all be a lot of fun, and I’m hoping they will help to elevate The Steele Sports Bar to the next level.
That’s just a taster, too. I’m really excited about the month ahead and I can’t wait to share it with you all.
